Ingredients for Homemade Chocolate Topping

This Homemade Chocolate Topping from scratch is so easy to make.

You will need heavy cream which makes the chocolate sauce rich and creamy.

Then you will add some butter, a pinch of salt, vanilla and powdered sugar to keep it sweet!

Homemade Chocolate Sauce (3)

Chocolate is the most important ingredient. You can use chocolate chips, baking chocolate or melting chocolate. You can use semi-sweet or milk chocolate. If I use chocolate chips I use milk chocolate but if I use baking chocolate I use semi sweet.

I either use chocolate chips ( I love Ghirardelli) or Bakers melting chocolate!

Making Homemade Chocolate Sauce

In a medium sized saucepan, over medium heat, you will just add all of the ingredients. Whisk the ingredients together until the butter and chocolate is melted and smooth.

The Perfect Chocolate Flavor

The chocolate combined with heavy cream and powdered sugar give it a perfect sweet chocolate taste, unlike some other chocolate sauces that use cocoa powder and tend to be a little more dark chocolate tasting.

Servings: 12 servings (1/4 cup servings)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 4 oz. semi-sweet melting chocolate, or 3/4 cup chocolate chips see notes
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Put all of your ingredients in a saucepan. Over medium heat, whisk/stir until butter and chocolate are melted and ingredients are completely combined and smooth.

  • Serve over ice cream, brownies, cheesecake or any sweet treat! This sauce will thicken after it cools a little bit!

  • This will store in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. Just reheat on the stove when ready to serve.

Notes

We use this sauce for Brownie Sundaes. Try my Easy Homemade Brownies!

I always use the semi-sweet baking chocolate, but chocolate chips work great too. I prefer Baker’s baking chocolate or Ghirardelli. (see photo below)

Thank you Beth. It is an awesome sauce. But, as I said I really wanted more of a topping, I guess. FYI and others. I added two rounded teaspoons of high quality cocoa powder and got exactly what I was looking for.

Just made this. Super taste, but thinner than I’d like. Not sure how to thicken.

Hi Jann!! This chocolate sauce is a pourable chocolate sauce so it won’t harden around fruit or pretzels. It isn’t as thin as water or broth but is pourable like a pasta sauce or gravy. You can try heating it for longer- just whisk it the entire time-cream should thicken the longer it’s over heat- just be careful you don’t burn or scorch it. If it’s still not thick enough you can thicken it with a cornstarch slurry (it will not effect the taste at all)!

Would you be able to freeze the sauce in small mason jars and then just let it defrost in the counter or fridge? Thx

Hi CJ! The recipe has heavy whipping cream in it which doesn’t always freeze well. The sauce may separate when it defrosts but you can try it…. it won’t make you sick, the texture just may be off a bit! 🙂
